The Hibbert Almshouse Charity
History
The first major renovations to the almshouses since they were built in 1859 was carried out in the early 1980’s. War damage was made good, and both the front railings and the pitched roof to our Western tower were re-instated. Also a new gas-fired boiler was installed, and other works were carried out.
Now, 40 years later the trustees realised that further money needed to be spent
on the building and to improve “Equal Access”. Much work has been done to restore
the stonework, and, for the first time since 1940 we have both tower finials in place,
made from cast-iron, and a new gas boiler.
To provide “Equal Access” the entrance gates have been replaced with wider gates,
and the slope of the driveway made less steep. (This overcomes a problem that
arose in 1909, when, in order to provide room for an electric tram, a slice of our front
garden was compulsorily acquired.) In the rear, the access to residents’ rear doors
has been made level, and a ramp built up to the rear garden.
Our Needs
The cost of the project, which was completed in February 2024, was £1.6 Million, and in order to pay for this we have had to borrow £0.15 Million. So, donations are welcome so as to reduce the burden of this debt.
